Believe it or not, we are still sometimes asked to do this. Unbelievable. How inconsiderate to your web viewers!
In order to get people to your restaurant's website, you or your web company have spent a lot of money or time and effort. You might be paying for ads on other websites. You may have banners on other websites. You might have sponsored links.
If you have used TSDG to create your website, TSDG has worked very hard to get you into search engines (free of charge, I might note).
So every time someone visits your website, it is as a result of hard work - or spending money.
Just as a patron in your establishment is an honored guest, so is a visitor to your website. You wouldn't, I'm sure, be inconsiderate to a guest in your restaurant, so why make life difficult for then, even insult them, on your website. Remember that potential patrons will be seeing your website as the internet branch of your restaurant; it's going to determine whether or not they visit you.
OK, back to links. A viewer is reading your home page:
Welcome to Fred's Pizza. We hope you'll enjoy our website. Please take a look at our menu. Don't forget to check out our desserts. And please see our events page ....
OK, what does the reader do? They want to read your intro but do they click on your text links? "Er .. shall I? Yes? No? Er .. should I read on or click? Oh, I'll just go back to Google and look at the other restaurant..."
Yes, they'll leave and they'll leave feeling insulted. Why? Firstly they are annoyed by those links and secondly, by placing them there, you have implied that the viewer isn't smart enough to find your menu page or your dessert menu or your events listing all on their own.
Don't insult your viewers and don't treat them as three year olds!
