But all over the world, millions of people are eating foods which are traditional to the season. In Germany, they are eating stollen, a bread-like cake, usually eaten during the Christmas season as Weihnachtsstollen or Christstollen. Stollen (originally Striezel) was created in Dresden in around 1450.
Danes are enjoying roast duck with apple and prune stuffing anf Finns prefer fresh salmon with mulled wine. In Spain, they may be eating langostinos with esparragos blancos and in Sweden they have a great line of pastries and desserts featuring oranges, gingerbread and toffee and they even have their own special Christmas cheese.
In Britain, they show their fondness for sweet foods with mince pies, Christmas cake, plum pudding, brandy butter and yule logs. The US too, with candy canes, Christmas cookies, fruitcake, a variety of pies and eggnog.
Call it Christmas, call it 'the holidays' but it's a great excuse to eat!
