Could this be true? Is it possible that the burger giants will no longer be around in ten years time?
Yes it is, according to a supermarketguru.com poll. The poll indicated that he majority of people in their survey said that they were eating fewer fast food items than they were last year. A third said that they believed that giants such as McDonald's and Burger King would have to change considerably if they are to stay in business.
Expert Philip Lempert claims that the trends show that the fast food giants are in trouble. He says ""McDonald's announced its first quarterly loss ever, and the second largest Burger King franchisee filed for bankruptcy. Most disturbing is that both these companies think the way to recapture consumer attention and loyalty is through price cuts; value menus and 99 cent burgers. They aren't listening to consumers."
One third of the people polled said that the fast food chains should add healthier options to their menus.
This article claims that this has happened before. Quote follows:
In 1975 there were more than 1,000 Howard Johnson's restaurants coast to coast. Known for their orange roofs, HoJo colas and countless ice cream flavors, Howard Johnson's owned the travel dining business. But business declined as fast food restaurants popularized. Unwilling to change their marketing or merchandising to accommodate the new consumer fast food trend, today, HoJo has approximately 71 restaurants and their flagship in Time Square is closing.
Will we still see McDonald's and Burger King in ten years?
