The social networking sites have been getting bad press lately and it's hardly surprising. The idea of a social network is great but the reality is different. I think many of us have grown out of them.
That's why the current trend is for small networks which cater to people with a particular hobby or interest.
These are perfect because you meet like-minded people and it's likely that the people who run the site are there often keeping things in order and performing general housekeeping.
What's interesting for the restaurant and food service industries, is that it's not difficult to set up your own social networking website. This way, you develop your own members who can interact with you and your business.
I illustrated this post with a screenshot of a website for a sushi restaurant (designed by TSDG) because as an example, such a restaurant could have a 'sushi lovers' network'. This would attract people who like the type of food you serve and they can be offered special discounts and deals as part of their membership.
A sports bar could have a very busy network, supporting and commenting on local teams and games.
If your restaurant is in a resort, offer local tourist information and answer potential vistors' queries.
A vegetarian restaurant could have a fabulous social networking site.
If you have entertainment in your restaurant, what a great way to communicate and meet your regulars.
If you cater weddings, a bridal network would be a great idea.
Your chef can make a name for himself by communicating via a social networking site.
If you specialise in regional cuisine, edducate and interact with your customers (and if you're an Indian restaurant, I'll be happy to join!)
You, or you staff, will have to set some time aside to keep your network lively but what better way to interact, promote your business and make people part of your own elite club.
As an example, here is a TSDG-designed social network for BMW owners and enthusiasts.
