What we'll do is this. We'll get the contractor and just have him build the house. We don't need all that fuss first, do we? I know what these people are like. They like to have blueprints to work from and all sorts of things like that. Scale models, detailed plans, schedules - what a performance and surely that's such a waste of time?
We don't need that. Let's just show the contractors where our land is and let his company build the house anyway.
I know, I know, people say that's a ridiculous way to do it because all the various people - the electricians, plumbing contractors, plasterers and so on won't have anything to follow but I think that's stupid. After all, what makes them the experts?
You see, I can't decide whether I want the kitchen to face east or west yet. Once the house is built, I'll be able to tell better. What's that you say? Oh, that's OK, they can move it.
And I haven't quite determined how many bedrooms I'd like. I'm thinking three but maybe four would be better. And a bathroom for each. Maybe they can build it as a 3/3 for now and then they can always add another bedroom and bath later.
Also, I'm still wondering whether to have a pool. Maybe they can build one and then if I decide I don't want it, they can take it away.
I also haven't quite decided what style I'd like the house to be - sometimes I think I wan't a very sleek and modern house. Other times, I feel as though I'd like something more traditional.
But once I see it, I'll know. Maybe the contractor could build a modern house first and then, if I don't like it, we can switch to a more conventional building?
I'm sorry, what did you say? Expensive? Why should that cost more? No, of course they wouldn't have to knock it down and start again if I decided I wanted to move the kitchen, add a couple of rooms and build a larger deck. Why should they? After all I'm employing them to build a house for me, it's not my fault if they don't get it right, is it? If they don't get it right, they'll just have to keep rebuilding it until I like it.
Seems sensible to me.
Listen, I know about houses. I've lived in several. I know these architects and contractors say they're the experts but it's a house, for goodness' sake. I'm fully familiar with houses. I live in one, don't I? So I know just as much about houses as these so-called experts do.

No, that wasn't a comedy sketch. And it wasn't a real conversation either; no-one is really that stupid - are they? So what has this got to do with anything? Just see what category this post is under ...
