I just don't know who they are. In the last few years of the previous century, the website business was booming. Anyone could set up a web 'design' business. I know, because I did.
There was no controlling body, mainly because Graphic Designers' Guild hadn't yet woken up to the web world. So who were these 'web designers'?
Largely, they were teckies, naturally. It was only teckies who knew anything about the web. The problem is, of course, that teckies aren't designers, PR people, advertising people or marketing experts. So the websites they created might have worked (in that they were on the internet - if you could find them) but they had little else to commend them.
In addition to the teckies, some PR people thought that creating websites would bring extra revenue for them. But of course, they knew nothing about the internet or how to even begin to build a website. So they either farmed out the work to a third party (those teckie companies, or they employed an in-house 'expert'. The problem was, of course, that the PR people wanted things that the teckies couldn't do. And PR people don't know how to write for the web. So the consequences were and are pretty dire.
The same applies to the advertising people and the marketing companies. The internet is a completely different medium to those they are used to.
So, when you are embarking on a web project, you need to find a company with extensive experience of building good websites for many years; a company which has a great deal of experience in marketing, PR and advertising and ..... DESIGN.
Now, where are you going to find that?
