Well, due to the spectacular lack of response from clients (and ... er .... lack of gratitude) I have always assumed that people just don't realize the importance of a text-only version.
I have, of course, gone on about it for long enough - how a text-only version helps anyone who is browsing your site without images to navigate your site properly. But who browses without images?
Just because you don't, don't think that other people don't. Some of them will be visually handicapped people, using a screenreader. Increasingly, I use the internet WITHOUT images if I have a wifi connection which isn't as speedy as my home or work connection. Lots of people do that - people aboard ship, people in airports etc.
