Another imaginary conversation with one of those awkward customers ...
"I'd like the recipe for your peach pie please".
"I'm sorry sir, but that is our secret recipe".
"I realize that, but I'd like the recipe".
"As I said sir, it's a secret recipe".
"Yes, you said. But I want the recipe. You don't understand. I've just paid for five of those to take out".
"Yes?"
"Yes. It's delicious and want to make it at home".
"But I said ... I can't do that, it's a secret recipe".
"But I paid you good money!"
"Yes, for five pies, not for the RECIPE!"
"OK, let me be straight with you. I have a small diner and I want the recipe so that I can serve it in my establishment."
Yeah, right.
Your peach pie recipe came from your granny. It was your granny who interested you in the food service business. You spent years at culinary school. You took granny' recipe and, over the years, you used your skill and knowledge to perfect that pie; adapting it to modern ingredients and a restaurant kitchen. Your pie is famous for miles around. Every week, you sell hundreds; that pie is the mainstay of your successful business.
And yet here is this jerk, with some crummy diner somewhere, who wants the recipe so that he can serve YOUR pie in his place; making money out of YOUR efforts! "Go and develop your own pie recipe. Why should I give YOU the benefit of my years of experience, my training and my hard work?????"
Ridiculous story, of course, it could never happen, could it?
