Regular readers of this rant will know that I have no patience with clients who ask "how do I update my website?"
Read here for more ... and here. As you can see, I am amazed that there are people in the world who think that a website is somehow like a Word document; that it can be edited and added to by someone who doesn't know what they are doing. It's a bit like flying your own airplane or performing your own appendectomy - a certain level of skill and experience is required.
I hear "How do I post to my website?" (As though the website is a forum or a blog!)
Or, even better "OK, I have the user name and password to access by site. Now what do I do?" (See link one above!)
But it's true that search engines prefer sites which are regularly updated. It's also true that software can be fitted to our site to enable an amateur to update their website. This can be done in two ways, the first being the ideal way.
1. When your website is built, content-management software is installed onto your site and your site is designed and coded accordingly.
2. Content-management software can be fitted to your existing site. This is less satisfactory from a design point of view as the original design could be compromised slightly, but nevertheless, you will still have the facility to update your website.
Updating your website is then easy.
What is content-management software?
A content-management system (CMS) makes it easy for you to update your website without having to know anything about web development. With just a few clicks you can update articles, upload photos, change the text on your homepage, or add new products to sell on your website. If you've ever used web mail (like Hotmail or Yahoo) you already have the skills necessary to use a content management system.
