A couple come into your restaurant one evening. The woman orders the most expensive item on your menu. Your chef lovingly prepares it - it's the specialty for which he's famous - and it is duly served.
The server notices that the woman takes a mouthful and then leaves the rest:
"Is everything OK, madam?"
The customer smiles "Fine, thank you. It's delicious. I'm just not very hungry that's all. But thank you".
The server offers to box the remaining food but the woman explains that they have a long drive ahead of them and such a delicate dish would no doubt spoil in the car "But thank you" she says, smiling.
As the owner, you are called to the table shortly after the couple have received the guest check because the lady's companion is refusing to pay for that dish.
"I'm not paying for it, she didn't eat it!"
You discover that there was nothing wrong with the food, indeed she proclaimed it delicious. You discover that she refused the offer to have the dish boxed to take away. Your chef lovingly prepared that dish. Your server served it promptly and dealt with the customers beautifully. (And you do, of course, have to pay your staff for their trouble).
But the chap is adamant that he's not paying for the $50 entree because 'she didn't eat it' even though it was 'delicious' and his ladyfriend didn't want the remains boxed.
What can you do? In a restaurant, of course, this conversation is more than likely taking place in the dining room, in front of other customers, so you have to be reasonable and resolve the situation as amicably as possible.
Another crazy scenario? Does the bloke think that you are going to dust off the remains of the meal and serve it to someone else??? That it will be recycled into tomorrow's soup du jour??? Yes, a really crazy person, yes?
OK, then:
Caller: I have just received an invoice for an ad your company created for me last month.
TSDG: Ah yes?
Caller: Well, I'm not going to pay for it.
TSDG: It was a great ad...
Caller: Oh I agree, very good indeed.
TSDG: So why are you saying that you're not going to pay for it?
Caller: Because we didn't use it.
Hmm......
