I am TSDG's resident grumpy old woman so you expect me to have opinions about everything, don't you?
Well, here's another. I've never liked welcome mats (hence the image) because I'd prefer to welcome people to my home personally, rather than leaving it up to a blasted mat. Plus, they're ugly.
But worse - much worse - is welcome to our website.
No-one really means that - it's just lazy writing. A few years ago, I read an article on the BBC's website saying that a Canadian study showed that people took less than a second to evaluate a website. Of course, what they were saying was that the look and feel of the website determines whether people will linger or click away to the opposition.
But the first words you choose for your website are just as important. You've passed the less-than-a-second mark and you actually have someone reading your site. Honestly, can't you think of anything better to say than welcome to our website?
Remember too that search engines pay great attention to the first words on your site so welcome to our website isn't exactly search engine-friendly, is it?
Welcome to our website? PLEASE think again!
