You've got a client who has an urgent urgent urgent job. He's a regular client so you want to accommodate him, if humanly possible. You adjust your schedule to free up a designer. You have to put back another client's work because of it, but you hope they'll be OK about it.
The designer will have to stay late to do the job, of course, but you want to keep your client happy.
The designer does the job and another member of staff get print prices ready. All are sent to the client. Then ...
Nothing.
Not a word.
You know that the work the designer did is fine; you've been working with the client for a long time, so you know that there is no problem with the presented design.
And you get a bit grumpy - well, you do if you're the grumpy old woman. You see, this was an urgent job evidently, and you've juggled the schedule, persuaded a designer to stay late (not always the easiest task in the world) and then, nothing.
Let's look at a restaurant scenario. A party of ten come in one evening, just before your kitchen is due to close. You don't have a table for ten available at that very minute but you can juggle some tables around, those people are on their third coffee so they will be leaving soon, you persuade your chef to do some overtime ... after all, you don't want to lose the business of a party of ten people. You tell them that their table will be ready in fifteen minutes. They say they'll stroll down the street and be back.
Fifteen minutes go by, twenty, twenty five ... and after half an hour, the party of ten arrives. By this time, your servers were preparing to leave too, but you persuade one of them to stay on. With a party of ten, the tip should be worth it, after all.
Your party of ten then settle into their table and order a few bottles of Perrier. The server goes to take their order but they're not ready yet. Fifteen minutes later, a few of them are ready but others aren't. They have questions. Does the sauce contain cream? Can you do the seafood pasta without the shrimp? What exactly is rabe? At last, they are ready to order ... you think. Just when the server thinks she has the order straight but someone wants to change his mind. Then it turns out that they have had an earlier meal, so all they want are appetizers. Oh, and they don't drink alcohol so they won't be needing any wine.
Desserts? No thanks. Coffee? No. But they sit there for an hour after the meal is finished, just chatting. You spot the amount on the guest check. It is pathetic. All that trouble...
