You don't have to tell me about the problems surrounding finding good staff but one restaurateur went just a little too far?
You might have seen in the news that the owner of a chain of Thai restaurants in Seattle is in trouble for paying large amounts to members of her staff to encourage them to marry her various Thai family members - so that those family members could legally move to the USA.
My first thought is this: if her staff members are married to her brothers and sisters, that means that she is working with her in-laws - how scary is that? In-laws are, well, you know what they are, at the best of times. Let's say they are OK in their place but their place doesn't mean your place of work.
Evidently, or should I say allegedly, the staff members were told that they need only stay married to the Thais until the immigrants' green cards had come through.
In a restaurant review on the internet, I found the following quote from the restaurant owner (prior to her arrest, of course).
"We have worked hard to retain a ‘family’ atmosphere for our employees to work in."
Er yes, you could say that...
P.S. Just be thankful that, unlike one person who wrote about this, I didn't call this post Thai the Knot.
