I just received an email and the subject was Order a natural looking wig now! Oh yeah, I'm really likely to open that email.
Of course, the first point should really be about wondering how on earth they got my email address. Am I on a list somewhere as someone who wants a wig? I am not. Obviously these people had just bought a list - any old list - and just blanket-blasted everyone.
It's like those emails I used to get which wanted to sell me something to cure penile disfunction; closely followed by one which wanted to enhance my bust. Can't they even separate the sexes on these lists?
There are so many junk emails that we all get and we can usually tell by the subject line whether we should use a few moments of our valuable time to open them. For most people, it's a case of if in doubt, don't.
But it does show how important it is to spend time considering the subject line of any email marketing campaign you're sending out.
I often find that people will spend hours writing the content, but give no thought to the subject line. Well, get the subject line wrong and no-one is going to read your carefully constructed message.
But do you know what I think is THE dead giveaway? Exclamation marks - or exclamation points as you might call them. Almost instinctively, I delete emails with exclamation marks. One is bad enough but quite often you'll see three or more. Special bargains available now!!!!! Make a fortune on Ebay!!!!
