No, I have no idea why this is. I have a theory but since it involves sexism, and I don't want to insult anyone, I'll keep it to myself.
I have ranted a great deal about font sizes so I hope that some random quotes I have found will help. Maybe people will believe me if someone else agrees? Who knows, but it's worth a try ...
There are important reasons why the wrong font size can turn your audience away and lead to negative consequences for your business. Font sizes that are too large are going to get you immediately tossed into the unprofessional pile. You won't be deemed as worthwhile and you won't be able to really convert any prospects. Lots of people think that a design that showcases excessively large font sizes is a way to mask that you don't have anything of real value to say or offer. If people think that about your online business, then you're sunk.
From another source:
Always be consistent when using font styles and sizes. Avoid using large font sizes, as this looks very unprofessional.
And another:
Be consistent and elegant. Whenever you mix and match different fonts and font sizes, the result almost always ends up as a cluttered, unprofessional looking mess. Don’t go overboard with the large fonts either. If you want to place emphasis on certain items or points, use bold or italics instead.
Another:
Large fonts look cheap and unprofessional as well as looking clumsy. Using gigantic fonts is one of the biggest indicators of an inexperienced designer.
Yet more:
Everyone has a business card these days, but not everyone has a great business card. All too often, amateur graphic designers try to emphasize their clients' businesses in the wrong ways. They use too many (and too large) fonts, cheap clip art or poor color combinations that distract from the card's message and end up looking gaudy and unprofessional.
You want more?
You also don’t want your font too large, as this can make it difficult for the eyes to scan across a large body of text.
Even more?
The large font, suitable for a near-blind person, lends a childish and unprofessional feel and the resulting lack of white space leaves the pages feeling cluttered.
I wonder if people will believe me now???
