I was just reading an article on a website which gave tips to design students. It started well. Do an internship with an established design firm, it said. That's good. I agree. You'll get a lot of experience, knowledge and possibly some valuable contacts.
Speaking of which, the second tip was to make connections. That's also a great idea. "It's not what you know ..." etc. etc.
The third, and this is the one I just love, advised the design student to learn to write well. Yes, yes, yes. Please let's have more young designers who can string more than three words together without a single typo. Let's have more young designers who know the difference between they're, there and their.
As I have said before - at some considerable length - design is about communication. If you can't communicate via the written word, can you really call yourself a designer?
But here's the part I loved. The article went on to say:
Cover letters, resume’s, business emails, copy for a design, contracts, and design proposals are just a few of the many things for which you will need to have strong verbal skills.
What's that? Resume’s?
Resume’s?
I'll tell you what. If you send me a resumé and use an apostrophe in that way, let me suggest that you forget about being a designer and take up green-grocery.
Tomato's anyone?
